This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the art of medieval writing and book production. You will learn how one became a scribe in the Middle Ages, what knowledge and skills were required, and which tools were used to create manuscripts before the invention of the printing press.

Following Bernard’s example, participants will have the opportunity to try writing in the same script he used, Protogothic script, using writing tools similar to those employed by medieval scribes. Through practical experience, the workshop offers a unique insight into the craftsmanship, patience, and artistry involved in the creation of medieval books.

The workshop is suitable for all curious minds and enthusiasts of history, calligraphy, manuscripts, books, and medieval culture. No previous experience is required.

About the Facilitator –

Dr. Dijana Pita da Costa holds a PhD in Heritology from the University of Ljubljana and works as a Curator Educator at the Slovene Museum of Christianity. An enthusiast of medieval culture, she specialises in Protogothic calligraphy and enjoys sharing the art of manuscript writing. Her work focuses on museum education, audience engagement, and making heritage accessible through hands- on learning.
