Monicas in the 17th century Goa by Dr. Fatima da Silva Gracias

Monicas is a term used in reference to the nuns and other women living in Mosteiro de Santa Monica, a cloistered Augustinian Convent at Rua de Monicas, Monte Santo, Old Goa. This impressive convent was one of the biggest in the Portuguese Empire in the East. The talk will discuss the lifestyle of these women, their activities and issues they faced with religious and civil authorities.

Dr. Fátima da Silva Gracias is a Goa based Indo-Portuguese academic, Historian, author of several books and other publications which include Kaleidoscope of Women in Goa, Beyond the Self – Santa Casa de Misericordia de Goa, Health and Hygiene in Colonia Goa 1510-1961, Cozinha de Goa: History and Tradition of Goan Food, Faces of Colonial Goa: The Work of Goan Artist Antonio Xavier de Trindade. She is the Convener of Goa State Chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), member of Academia de Marinha, Lisbon,Portugal and Cátedra Eduardo Lourenço (Camões IP).

This month, the Museum of Christian Art’s Heritage Hour will also pay tribute to Dr. Jose Blanco, former Trustee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Portugal, who passed away in July this year.

Dr. Jose Blanco, former Trustee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Portugal, passed away in Lisbon this July. Dr. Blanco played a pivotal role in the Foundation’s support for the establishment of the Museum of Christian Art in Goa. Past and present members of the Museum, along with friends and acquaintances of Dr. Blanco, will pay tribute to him during the Heritage Hour.
